Mason Lavallet
For Mason Lavallet, leading Oak Mountain Soccer Club is an opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape his soccer career. An Oak Mountain High School alumnus, two-time state champion, and former NCAA Division I player, Mason brings a personal connection to Oak Mountain’s soccer tradition and a commitment to helping the next generation build on it.
Mason helped Oak Mountain capture back-to-back Alabama Class 6A state championships in 2007 and 2008, earned Class 6A State Tournament MVP honors, and served as team captain in 2009. His experience representing Oak Mountain established the standards of preparation, accountability, teamwork, and competitive pride that continue to influence his approach to coaching. He credits his father, Hank Lavallet, who coached him growing up and now coaches the U14 Oak Mountain Eagles, with helping shape him as a player.
After high school, Mason played one season at the NAIA level at King College in Bristol, Tennessee, scoring six goals as a freshman, before competing for three seasons at NCAA Division I Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. At Winthrop, he added 11 goals and five assists, finishing his collegiate career with a total of 17 goals. He also helped the Eagles win the 2012 Big South Conference championship and earn a berth in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
His college career included a defining moment in Winthrop soccer history. In the 2012 Big South championship game against nationally ranked No. 8 Coastal Carolina, Mason scored the winning goal with just 1:10 remaining, completing Winthrop’s comeback from a 2–0 deficit to secure a 3–2 victory. The result marked Winthrop’s first victory over a top-10 opponent. Earlier in the tournament, he also scored the overtime golden goal against Liberty to send the Eagles into the semifinals.
Mason finished that championship season with seven goals, tied for second on the team. He also earned Winthrop Athlete of the Week recognition after scoring both goals in a 2–1 overtime victory at Wofford.
Today, Mason brings his playing experience to youth coaching through his work as a U9 girls head coach and an assistant coach with the U14 Oak Mountain Eagles. He holds a U.S. Soccer D License. Working across these age groups has reinforced his belief that strong player development requires clear instruction, appropriate challenges, and an environment where players feel confident making decisions and learning from mistakes.
As Director of Coaching, Mason’s priorities include supporting the club’s coaches, establishing shared coaching language and development principles, and creating a consistent experience for players as they move through the club. His approach emphasizes technical development, understanding the game, positive reinforcement, and helping players recognize both what to do and why it matters.
Mason believes Oak Mountain’s strong soccer community deserves a club that develops local talent with purpose. His goal is to help build a lasting foundation where young players can enter the game, develop a love for it, and find the coaching and opportunities to pursue their potential. Having experienced Oak Mountain’s championship tradition firsthand, he wants today’s players to develop that same pride in representing their community.
Outside soccer, Mason has owned and operated HEAT Freight since 2019. His experience as a business owner brings an additional perspective on leadership, organization, communication, and building toward long-term goals.
Mason lives in Chelsea with his wife, Taylor, a registered nurse. He is the proud father of two daughters, Harper and Leighton. As both a coach and a father, he values the influence youth sports can have on a child’s confidence, friendships, character, and sense of belonging. His commitment to OMSC is rooted in helping local families experience those benefits while continuing Oak Mountain’s tradition of excellence.
